How to summarize a YouTube video

OmniveraLabs’ video summarizer reads or watches a video for you and writes a short, readable summary of what it covers, so you can understand the content without watching the whole thing.

Paste a YouTube link or upload a video or audio file. The summary format adapts to the content: a short overview with key points for a multi-topic video, or a compact paragraph for a single-idea one. You can also turn on timestamps to see what the video covers at each point in time.

  1. Paste a YouTube link, or upload a video or audio file.
  2. Confirm you have the rights to process the content.
  3. OmniveraLabs reads the full video and writes a summary of the key points.
  4. Copy the summary, or download it alongside the full transcript.

Summarizing long videos

A summary is most useful when the video is long enough that watching it is the cost you are trying to avoid: a conference talk, a two-hour podcast, a recorded lecture, a webinar. For these, turn on timestamps so the summary breaks into points with a time marker, and you can jump to the part you actually need.

For a short video with one idea, the plain summary is a compact paragraph instead.

Summary or transcript, which do you need

A summary tells you what a video covered. A transcript gives you what was said, word for word. Use the summary when you are deciding whether the video is worth your time, or when you need the gist for notes. Use the transcript when you need to quote something accurately, search for a specific phrase, or turn the words into subtitles.

Both come from the same source, so you can run one and then the other on the same video.

Frequently asked questions

How do I summarize a YouTube video for free?

Paste the video’s YouTube link into OmniveraLabs’ summarizer and it returns a written summary of the key points, free.

Does the summarizer work on long videos?

Yes, it reads the full video before summarizing. For very long videos, consider using the timestamped summary option so you can see what is covered at each point in time.

Can I summarize an uploaded file instead of a YouTube link?

Yes. You can upload a video or audio file directly instead of pasting a link.

Does it show timestamps for each point in the summary?

Yes, there is an optional “Show Timestamps” setting that breaks the summary into timestamped points instead of one flowing summary.

Is my video content saved after summarizing?

No. Generated summaries are not saved to your account history, and uploaded media is only used temporarily to process the request.

Do I need an account to summarize a video?

No. You can summarize a video and see a preview of the result without signing up. A free account unlocks the full summary.

How long can the video be?

There is no length limit on a YouTube video pasted as a link. Uploaded files are limited to 200MB for signed-in users.
